The Romanian incumbent telco Romtelecom will launch an IPTV service this year, according to the company’s spokesperson Cristina Popescu.
She broke the news to Mediafax, adding that it would start once an equipment supplier, the selection of which was close to being finalised, had been found.
Popescu also said the telco was already trialling IPTV and that services would be made available in a number of major Romanian cities.
Although IPTV has been on Romtelecom’s agenda for some time, the OTE-backed company has meanwhile built up a highly successful DTH operation named Dolce that has already secured over 500,000 subscribers.
The IPTV market is virtually non-existent in Romania at present, with services largely confined to affluent parts of the capital, Bucharest.
