The Dutch consumer electronics firm Philips has confirmed it will officially launch the first cinematic widescreen TV set with a 21:9 aspect ratio on January 29. Sets will become available this spring in selected European markets.
Called the Cinema 21:9, the LCD set is the very first on the market to correctly display widescreen movies without black bars on the screen, as is the case with regular widescreen models with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
The display is 56 inches across and boosts Ambilight technology.
The set will be available in Germany, Belgium, the UK and France.
No pricing for the ultra-widescreen set has yet been announced.
