Portugal Telecom says its IPTV offer Meo is proving decisive in reducing churn and attracting new voice and data customers. Figures published as part of the communications company’s third quarter results show that 60% of IPTV customers are new to the operator.
191,000 new customers have been added so far this year, with PT passing 200,000 customers on September 23 and reaching 211,000 customers by the end of September. The figures also include the satellite service launched in April.
The operator is focusing heavily on content through deals with Disney Channel, the Hollywood Studios and internationally recognized football clubs. An agreement with Portuguese football club Sporting Lisbon has resulted in the launch of Benfica TV on October 2. Catch-up TV content from public broadcaster RTP and commercial channel SIC has also been enhanced.
40% of the subscriber base have now used the 1,5000 title VOD service on a paid for basis and consume an average of 2.8 movies per month.
