Programmes from the BBC iPlayer can now be downloaded to portable media players capable of supporting Windows Media-protected content. Included are the Sony Walkman E and S series, Archos 605 WIFI and Internet Media Tablet, the Philips GoGear 52xx series, Samsung YP-P2 and YP-Q1 and Nokia N96.
Because of the wide variety of portable devices on the market, it may not be immediately apparent to purchasers of new equipment as to whether it is actually compatible, and consequently the BBC is building a list of compatible players.
Programmes would be downloaded from the BBC iPlayer online, then transferred to the portable device through a USB port using a process known as sideloading. The BBC is also working on improving the options currently available to Mac and Linux users.
