SmarDTV has said over two million of its CableCARDs have now been deployed, principally in the United States and Korea. The Kudelski Group company has also said it will open a new office in Korea.
The credit card sized SmarDTV cards make it possible for consumers to view and record digital channels on personal video recorders, personal computers and televisions without the need for a set-top box.
In addition to compatibility with the US OpenCable specifications, SmarDTV is also DVB compliant. The company is a founder member of the CI+ Forum that is seeking to use the advanced Common Interface devices to create a similar format in the European market. This could potentially further open a retail market for set-top boxes – and IDTVs – in some territories.
