Discovery Communications has announced the launch of nine channels on YouTube. They will feature a selection of content from Discovery’s portfolio of channels tailored to the You Tube community. Included are a series of targeted international channels that will feature localised and original language content.
The first of these launches next month in the UK. Ink will feature UK-originated content for the tattooist community, working with the Ink franchise in Miami, LA and London. Next month a YouTube version of DMAX will launch in Germany.
“With YouTube’s unmatched reach, Discovery fans from around the world now have another platform to engage with their favourite shows, and new audiences can sample our compelling nonfiction content like never before online,” said Josh Freeman, executive vice president, digital media, Discovery Communications. “Our partnership with YouTube is a significant step in the company’s strategy to expand the global reach of our content on the web and draw new viewers to our networks.”
The first fruit of the partnership is a collaboration on programme promotion. In the United State’s tonight’s (September 24) episode of Mythbusters will invite YouTube’s online audience to contribute towards a special Viral Myths episode.
In all the nine branded YouTube destinations are Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Planet Green, Discovery Health, Science Channel, Military Channel, Investigation Discovery and Turbo.
