Arris Group is to receive €4.5 million from IDA Ireland (Industrial Development Agency) to strengthen its R&D operations in Cork. The government-backed funding will be used to develop high value video products at the former Com21 business, acquired by Arris in 2003.
“This is excellent news as the investment is leading-edge R&D and will further secure the existing ARRIS operations and employment at the Cork site,” said minister for labour affairs, Billy Kelleher. “It again demonstrates the ability of Irish based R&D operations to contribute cutting-edge and highly complex solutions as part of a parent company’s strategic future development plans. This project will represent a major shift for ARRIS into higher value video products for the cable industry, which is viewed as a key area for growth in the coming years.”
Arris plans to improve its existing D5 Universal EdgeQAM (UEQ) and develop the R&D required to increase large volume manufacturing capability while maintaining quality. The D5 supports services including VOD and DOCSIS 3.0 broadband internet.
IDA Ireland is one of a number of agencies established by the Irish government as part of a €500m grant scheme to change the country to a knowledge economy.
