BBC HD will launch in Poland by the end of the year. It follows the launch of an Australian channel in June.
The news was given by Dean Posennisskie, SVP of BBC Global Channels, to Wirtualne Media, though he did not confirm a launch date.
Talks have already taken place with a view to launching the channel in the Netherlands, which has relayed the BBC’s domestic channels for many years, and in Scandinavia. Sports rights, such as the current coverage of the Olympics would need to be stripped out, though the task has been made easier by the recent loss of live FA Cup and England football internationals.
BBC Global Channels, which already distributes BBC Lifestyle, BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge and CBeebies in Poland, also plans to open an office in the country at the beginning of next year.
