NHK World TV to launch on Astra

August 19, 2008 18.41 Europe/London By Robert Briel

NHK World TV, the international channel from the Japanese state broadcaster, is set to launch free-to-air transmissions on the Astra satellite at 19.2 degrees East. Last week, the first test broadcasts started.

NHK World TV is a channel targeted at non-Japanese speakers offering NHK’s news and information programmes, of which about 80% are in English or with English subtitles. The channel will be available free-to-air.

NHK programming is already available in Europe as part of the JSTV pay-TV service on Eutelsat’s Hotbird. This is the NHK World Premium offer, which consist of a full range of programming aimed at a Japanese speaking audience.
