MultiChoice has confirmed the introduction of its high definition television service. The pan-African DTH platform is facing a barrage of new competition from regional broadcasters with low cost offers.
It comes as no surprise that the company’s HD PVR product will be made available in retail stores from the beginning of August in time for coverage of the Beijing Olympics. The Pace-manufactured receiver is being offered at a launch price of R2,499 (€208.67) and features four tuners, a 500GB hard drive, Open TV Core 2 middleware and Irdeto CA.
HD subscribers will be able to link their new PVR to an existing Dual View PVR, MultiChoice’s dual video output receiver, or to a standard receiver.
The Olympic channel will launch on August 8 before morphing into MNET HD on August 22. The HD version of the premium channel will carry entertainment, sport, movies and wildlife documentaries.
