Liberty Media has set its eyes on Cologne based cable operator Unitymedia. At least according to the German Werben & Verkaufen trade magazine, which is reporting an apparent interest citing “media insiders”.
In 2002, John Malone’s Liberty Media was interested in acquiring all cable networks from Deutsche Telekom, but was stopped by the German cartel office. At the time, United Paneuropean Communications (UPC) owned parts of PrimaCom and was close to a deal with EWT-TSS.
Unitymedia operates the former Deutsche Telekom networks in the states of Nordrhine-Westphalia and Hesse; the operator has 4.7 million customers of which 925,000 take digital TV services.
