The tense relationship between public broadcaster SABC and DTH platform MultiChoice has worsened after the contract to broadcast SABC Africa on the MultiChoice DStv platform was not renewed.
SABC will be discontinued from August 1, although the public broadcaster is retaining the channel’s staff, ahead of a possible relaunch when DTT goes live in the country. In the short term there are plans for a merger with the struggling SABC International.
It’s the latest blow for SABC, which in May saw its proposals to receive payment for the carriage of its main channels, SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3, rejected by the regulator.
Profits at SABC fell by R200 million to R182.7 million in the year to March 2007.
