Brightcove has announced an upgrade to its online video platform. Brightcove 3 is currently in Beta and is being trialled by Fox Entertainment Group’s Beliefnet, Lifetime Networks, and Showtime Networks ahead of a full release in the autumn. The new version incorporates the video player and information about the videos into the context of the webpage itself.
Adam Berrey, Brightcove’s VP of Marketing & Strategy told Broadband TV News that customers would experience a seamless transition to the new version. “The new visual tools we’re providing will work in parallel with the old visual tools,” said Berry. “Some of the new features, such as contextual publishing and the new ability to deliver TV quality long form video content require that the customer implement new things. The old stuff works fine and without interruption. If they want to take advantage of the new features they’ll have to implement them in new projects.”
For the consumer there is no additional software that is required, other than their browser and Flash, itself already installed on 98% on computers worldwide.
The contextual video technique has been popularised by the BBC in its recent website revamp where news stories are automatically associated with any video reports on the same subject.
