The French media authority CSA has announced that it has officially issued the licence to Canal+ to operate an HD channel on the country’s DTT network. Broadcasts are expected to begin before year’s end.
The licence stipulates that from 2012 all broadcasts between 14 and 24 hours must me in HD. Programming during the ‘open window’ (the daily blocks of free-to-air programming) will remain in SD quality.
Earlier, the authority also issued licences to TF1 HD, M6 HD, France 2 HD and Arte HD for free-to-air HD broadcasts. Transmissions are due to start after the summer.
