The European Commission has withdrawn the legal case against Sweden after the country agreed to amend the rules governing digital terrestrial television.
Sweden had granted the platform operator Boxer the exclusive rights to handle subscription services on the DTT system.
The case was referred to the European Court of justice in October 2006 under laws requiring member states to abolish exclusive rights for the management of subscription services.
Last October, the Swedish government has proposed that the programme companies themselves decide on how to organise their pay-TV packages on the DTT system. The reality is that in a small market such as Sweden it remains practical for a single operator to manage pay-TV revenues on behalf of the DTT broadcasters.
