The French commercial broadcasters TF1, M6 and Canal+ have protested against a new tax. It is part of a plan proposed by a special commission under chairman Jean-François Copé, that looks into the consequences of the abolition of advertising on public channels from France Télévisions.
The Copé commission is looking into ways of compensating the loss of income when advertising will be abolished on the public channels. One of the proposals is to slap a new tax on the additional income that is expected to go to the commercial broadcasters.
The three broadcasters involved, TF1 (Nonce Paolini), M6 (Nicolas de Tavernost) and Canal+ (Bertrand Méheut), say they are ‘flabbergasted’ about this ‘illegal tax’ to compensate for the bad way of financing France Télévisions.
