Spanish cable network operator Ono has begun to test a broadband Internet service based on the DOCSIS 3.0 technology, which should provide high speed connections of up to 100 Mbps.
Carried out in the metropolitan area of Valladolid, in the autonomous municipality of Castile and Leon, the test will last six months and will precede the commercial launch of the service in the cities of Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona by the end of the year. As a result of the initiative, Ono becomes the first operator in Spain to introduce a nationwide broadband internet service with speeds of up to 100 Mbps.
Swedish company Adamo already offers 100 Mbps Internet connections in Spain, but the service is limited to some villages of Asturias. In order to develop the new network, which should be completed in 2009, Ono intends invest €75 million.
