Croatia is three years behind the European Union in the take of broadband internet, with a penetration rate – 8.7%, or 380,000 users – the same as the EU average in 2005.
However, the government expects it to rise to at least 12%, or 500,000 users, by the end of the year.
State secretary Igor Lucic has expressed satisfaction with the results of the Broadband Internet Development Strategy, as the number of broadband users rose from only 4,000 late in 2003 to 386,950 at the end of 2007.
