A major international collaboration will bring a live demonstration of the Japanese Super Hi-Vision system to IBC in Amsterdam this September. NHK of Japan, RAI of Italy and BBC of UK will demonstrate the next generation high definition system that combines 7680 x 4320 pixel images with 22.2 channel immersive audio.
The demonstration also brings together Siemens, the BBC’s technology partner, Cable & Wireless which will provide fibre connectivity from London to Amsterdam, and Eutelsat which will provide a satellite link from Torino to Amsterdam.
A series of demonstrations will combine content shot in Japan with live pictures fron London. Content will also be fed into the system from a server in Torino, Italy, from where Eutelsat will deliver the pictures over two satellite transponders.
The content will be shown around IBC; in the NHK theatre using an 8k x 4k projector, in the EBU village, where the content will be shown on a 3840 x 2160 pixel LCD display and on the Eutelsat stand.
Super Hi-Vision was developed initially by NHK and is now part of the Broadcast Technology Futures group (BTF), an alliance of leading broadcast research and development facilities and bodies including the European Broadcast Union.
IBC 2008 takes place in Amsterdam from September 11-16, 2008.
