The Irish government has published a new Broadcasting Bill designed to consolidate 50 years of broadcasting legislation and repealing key acts that date back to 1960.
“This is a modernising Bill designed to meet the needs of Irish broadcasting as we enter a new era of media and regulation,” said Communications Minister Eamon Ryan. “In essence, the Bill aims to level the playing field of the broadcasting market in Ireland and place greater emphasis on the needs of viewers and listeners.”
The Bill will consolidate the roles of the BCI and the BCC into a single content regulator, the established Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. There will also be two new public service broadcasters, an Irish Film Channel and Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) channel.
