CABLE CONGRESS 2008 – MADRID. Vivienne Redding, EC Commissioner for Information Society and Media, has given her tentative approval to the practice of traffic prioritisation over cable networks. In a video message to the Cable Congress, Redding said such practices were legitimate, particularly when video was concerned.
“These techniques can also have the effect of degrading the quality of service, which is why the Commission is willing to give national regulators the authority to set minimum quality threasholds.” She added that consumers should be informed of any rules set by their operator.
Addressing the issue of the so-called next generation networks, Redding said the upgrade of cable networks was essential to introducing competition, which is why the commission had no so far submitted cable to further regulation in this area.
