Bulgaria is gearing up for a boost in broadband services. Local reports indicate that the incumbent telco BTC plans to invest BGN110 million (€56.2 million) this year on its ADSL and wireless infrastructure. It also expects its ADSL subscriber total to double to around 4.4 million, though there is as yet no indication of when the telco will launch an IPTV service. The alternative carrier Orbitel, which is backed by Hungary’s Magyar Telekom, has meanwhile announced that it has spent €12 million on a fibre-optic network that now reaches 90% of the Bulgarian population.
