The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has reaffirmed his government’s intention to scrap receiver licence fees. Speaking at a conference organised by the ruling Civic Forum (PO) Party, he said that legislation that will see pensioners and those on benefits made exempt from paying fees is likely to be proposed this week in the Polish parliament (Sejm). While this is envisaged as the first step to a complete end of fees, it remains unclear as to how the resulting shortfall in TVP’s finding will be made up. Although receiver licence fees should raise the public broadcaster in the region of PLN700-800 million (€199.9 –228.5 million) a year, in reality the total is nearer PLN350 million.
