OpenTV more than halved its losses in 2007. The middleware provider reported a loss of $5.2 million (€3.53 m) less than half its reported $10.8 million loss in 2006.Chief operating officer and acting chief executive officer, Ben Bennett attributed the figures to a streamlining of the business that had seen the disposal of unprofitable operations such as the Playjam gaming portal. “2007 marked an important year for OpenTV as we refocused our business strategy on our core middleware and advanced advertising businesses and took steps to move the company closer to achieving sustainable profitability,” he said. The fourth quarter figures showed an increase in revenues of over 52% to $38.2%, but including the recognition of $10.5 million of previously deferred revenue from UPC Broadband.Earlier this week OpenTV announced a new contract with Portugal’s ZON TV Cabo and the inclusion of its middleware in over 100 million devices. It has however lost the DTH platform UPC Direct, which is reverting to zapper boxes.
