The media authority of the state of Nordrhine-Westphalia has appealed against the decision by the European Comission to ban DTT subsidies for commercial broadcasters. The Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen (LfM) has started proceeding with the European Court against the Commission. Last October, the Commission ruled that any subsidies to promote digital switchover were illegal. The state wanted to give €6.8 million over a five year period. Without these grants, commercial broadcasters said they would not join the DTT platform in the state.
