The Portuguese government has ruled out the possibility of subsidies for DTT decoders. Augusto Santos Silva, the minister for parliamentary affairs, said the transition to the digital format would bring a greater selection of channels and the introduction of high definition television and that was incentive enough. “It is not our duty to supply plasma sets or decoding devices,” he told a house of representatives commission on Ethics, Society and Culture that closed yesterday.
Last week the Portuguese government approved the launch of a fifth national TV channel that would take its place in one of the new digital multiplexes.
