A total of 12 companies are reported to have joined forces to start a mobile TV trial in Poland, perhaps as soon as the beginning of next year. They include the country’s four mobile operators – Centertel, Polkomtel, PTC and P4 – and the DTH platform Cyfrowy Polsat, which is owned by Polsat, though neither TVP nor TVN, Poland’s two other leading broadcasters. The trial, which will use DVB-H technology, will be coordinated by the Polish Chamber of IT and Telecommunications (PIIT) and cost at least €5 million. However, it has already been criticised by TVN, which says the technology is already tried and tested, with the real focus now having to be which business model would work bet in Poland.
