Ericsson is to supply a total solution and become the prime integrator of Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) in Greece, according to a local report. Under the terms the deal, it will support the launch of ‘digital cities’ in the municipalities of Agrinio, Chania, Ermoupolis, Ierapetra, Iraklio, Kozani and Rethymno, employing FTTH infrastructure, switching and WiFi system to offer broadband Internet access and next generation services. Greece has the lowest usage of broadband Internet in the EU, with only 6.5% of the population accessing the Web in the first six months of this year. The government would like to increase this to 15% – currently the EU average – by 2009.
