Ofcom has published plans to auction off parts of the UK spectrum with mobile TV and satellite radio high on the list of possible uses. The auction of 1452 – 1492MHz commonly referred to as the L-band will be held online and is expected to commence in spring 2008.
The regulator says the spectrum will be released on a technology and service neutral basis meaning that the successful bidder will have the flexibility to decide exactly what to do with its purchase.
The frequency release is part of a wider programme that will ultimately include the so-called digital dividend, the spectrum freed as part of the move to digital television transmissions.
