Commercial broadcasters are preparing to join the new DTT service in the German state of Saarland and the city of Leipzig. From December 13, four multiplexes will come on line in Saarland; three of them will offer public broadcasters, the fourth will consist of regional channels SaarTV, Tele5 and QVC. Apart from the two main ARD and ZDF muxes, a third public multiplex will offer four regional channels, BR3, HR3, SWR3 and WDR3.
Before the end of the year a number of low power transmitters will come on the air in Leipzig and environs. This will house local broadcaster Leipzig Fernsehen, Bibel TV, BBC World (!) and a local city information channel, as well as the radio stations Radio Leipzig and Radio Horeb. The city will be served by a number of low power transmitters, which should cost considerably less than regular, high power DTT transmitters.
