The Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu has conceded that the country still has a long way to go in terms of introducing broadband services in rural areas. Speaking at the International Broadband Communications Conference in Bucharest and quoted in the local press, he nevertheless also emphasised that both Internet and broadband take up are growing rapidly in Romania, with the number of connections up by 78% and 90% respectively in the year to July 2007. By the end of this year, there should also be in the region of 246 electronic networks serving local communities up and running.
