PIKE Conference, ZAKOPANE. Speaking at the opening of the 31st Polish Chamber of Electronic Communication (PIKE) conference and exhibition in Zakopane, its president Jerzy Straszewki has called for changes to be made to country’s outdated broadcast law. He has also expressed concerns at the hold up in amendments to copyright legislation. PIKE is “far advanced” in its proposals for changes to the latter, having consulted with all media players with an interest in authors’ rights. The Polish parliament will next sit on November 5 – parliamentary elections are scheduled for this weekend – and Straszewski expressed hope that the copyright law will be amended in early 2008.
In other opening remarks, Marek Sowa, the president of the publishing group Agora and former VP of UPC Polska, has said he envisages cooperation with the Polish cable industry in the development of Internet-based services.
