The fact that DirecTV stopped marketing the TiVo service directly to their subscribers is hurting the firm badly: during the first half year 229,000 DirecTV households churned away. In total, the number dropped by 247,000 subs to well below 4.2 million. The company hopes to compensate these losses with new contracts with cable operators Comcast and Cox Communications. Apart from these alliances with cable companies, TiVo now also offers a stand-alone service in retail. Customers buy a TiVo box and subscribe to the EPG service using broadband internet.
