The recent decision to award a 20-year 3G licence to Turkey’s leading mobile operator Turkcell is to be reviewed by the country’s telecommunication board this week. Local reports say that the move follows complaints from the two other Turkish mobile operators Avea and Vodafone, which insist that number portability should be introduced in order to maintain competition in the marketplace. With complaints also coming from other quarters, it looks as though the award of the licence, which cost Turkcell €321 million, could be suspended. This will put a question mark over the launch of mobile TV services in Turkey, at least in the near future.
