This Sunday Dutch public broadcaster NOS finally started to broadcast in the 16:9 format. It has hitherto been reluctant to go widescreen, citing technical reasons for not launching earlier. Also, according to the NOS, it was of the opinion there were not enough 16:9 sets in the market.
Most other broadcasters, including RTL, VRT, SBS and even regional channels, have already been broadcasting in widescreen for quite some time. Last year, NOS was heavily critisised for showing the World Cup football games in the standard 4:3 format.
