CNN launches worldwide HD channel

September 5, 2007 07.16 Europe/London By Robert Briel

On September 1, CNN Worldwide launched its first 24-hour news channel in high definition, CNN-HD. Simulcasting with the US version of the SD channel, CNN-HD will present more than 60 hours each week of programming produced in the HD format.

As part of its entry into HD, CNN will produce all of its New York-based programmes, including CNN Presents and CNN: Special Investigations Unit documentaries, and special events in HD. The four-part documentary series Planet in Peril will also be presented in HD.

This is just a first step. CNN’s HD plans include upgrading equipment and resources for the network’s newsgathering operation and field production around the world. “The introduction of HD is a visible example of our drive for innovation,” said Jim Walton, president CNN Worldwide.

There are no concrete distribution agreements in place for Europe, but in the US DTH operator DirecTV is carrying the HD channel.
