NDS finds it easy being green

September 3, 2007 11.37 Europe/London By Julian Clover

IBC 2007 Stand 1.171

NDS has announced a series of technology initiatives aimed at helping consumers reduce their energy consumption and reducing its own carbon footprint. It is part of a range of measures introduced by parent company New Corporation to reduce its own impact on climate change.

An early initiative is the Auto Standby solution, developed by NDS to automatically switch inactive devices into the standby mode overnight, and introduced by BSkyB earlier this year. “Currently, an HD DVR can use as much power as a domestic refrigerator and we want to address this,” said James Field, NDS director of technology and new initiatives, NDS, and the company’s ‘Carbon Czar’.

Within its own house NDS is investing £1 million in video conferencing equipment to reduce the need for business travel between its 25 offices worldwide, conducting energy audits, and introducing energy saving light bulbs.

At IBC, NDS is sponsoring trams to encourage the use of public transport. It is also using recycled paper for marketing documents and plans to recycle much of its exhibition stand.
