Subtitles on channels operated by the Finnish public broadcaster YLE have disappeared from cable networks. Operators still transmitting analogue signals have been experiencing problems in downconverting YLE’s digital signals to the analogue format. According to YLE, most of the problems concern networks in Tampere, Lappeenranta and Rovaniemi. YLE has admitted that its subtitling system is more complex than that run by other operators.
Around 400,000 cable households are still to be upgraded to digital. The networks have been given a six-month grace period after this weekend’s analogue shutdown of terrestrial transmitters.
Sonera says that a solution cannot be implemented until the source of the problem has been identified, although Elisa says the problems have now been resolved.
