Private interest for Leipzig DTT

August 16, 2007 05.13 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Leipzig Fernsehen, BBC World, Bibel TV and a new local city info channel have applied to join the low power, low cost DTT initiative in the German city of Leipzig. Also, two local radio stations want to join the line-up, Radio Leipzig and the catholic broadcaster Radio Horeb.

According to a spokesperson for the media authority Sächsischen Landesanstalt für neue Medien (SLM), all the applications can be honoured. However, a formal decision will not be made until September 24.

The low power initiative will cover the city of Leipzig with a number of small transmitters increasing the offer to 17 TV channels instead of the current 13. None of the major private broadcasters such as RTL and ProSiebenSat1 have shown any interest and remain unavailable on DTT in the area.
