Koreans to DMB

August 2, 2007 17.29 Europe/London By Donald Koeleman

IBC 2007 (Stand 4.261)

At the DMB Pavillion a group of Korean companies is showing a complete range of products required to start your own T-DMB, multimedia over DAB, service. Content creation and play-out are provided by net&TV Studio4idmb and Cast4idmb, which offer a WYSWYG canvas and timeline editor and continuous monitoring of the target bandwidth. Dynamic adaptation of bandwidth allows for delivery aware content creation. A T-DMB Video and Audio Encoder, the PixDMB-E200H, is to be demonstrated by PIXTREE, which is also introducing a ‘Multimedia Solution for Convergence Device’ based on the Marvell PXA3xx (Monahans) application processor. It offers broadcast resolution H.264 decoding and supports a music player, navigation device, GPS systems, photo viewer, text viewer and a file viewer.

Renowned T-DMB backing research institute ETRI will bring its T-DMB Middleware based Interactive Data Service, a 3D DMB Broadcasting System, and a new DMB optimized file format to the Rai. According to ETRI, this is the first middleware standard for mobile broadcasting in the world. As a standard interface the T-DMB middleware will offer the opportunity for platform independent interactive data services. It will also provide basic applications such as an EPG.

The 3D DMB Broadcasting System, is promised to offer mobile reception and viewing of a seamless and realistic 3D Audio Visiual service without the need for special 3D glasses. ETRI’s new MAF for DMB file format integrates existing DMB content with additional information to facilitate interchange, management, editing, and presentation of the contents in a protected, managed, and interoperable way. Most of the component technologies are said to be already implemented on most of the T-DMB terminals and deployed in the market.

Content and services may be secured by using MarkAny’s ContenSAFER DRM and watermarking, or CoreTrust’s Core Crypt for DMB Conditional Access System. CoreTrust’s CAS is hardware independent as it is a software application. Audio, video and data service components are individually controlled offering a flexible access regime, that allows for various business models such as Pre-Paid, Post-Paid, or Order-ahead Pay Per View. MarkAny, instead of securing the distribution channel uses Digital Rights Management technology to prevent illegal distribution and copy of the multimedia content, it also proves content ownership using watermarking technology, as the basis for secure billing.

Remarkably, unlike the past two years, neither the DMB pavilion, nor the stands of the other T-DMB proponents, are located in their natural home the IBC Mobile Zone. The DMB Pavilion is found in hall 4 stand 261, MI FRIENDS – The European DMB- Project (Mobiles, Interaktives Fernsehen, Radio, Interaktivität, Entertainment und Neue Digitale Services), is exhibiting in the same hall at stand 291, and the World DMB Forum is just a walk down the aisle to stand 5.139.
