Hungary’s cable industry is bracing itself for huge change following the scrapping of a rule that prevented operators from providing services to more than one-third of the population. The move has not only halted legal action being taken by the EC against the country for failing to comply with European telecom legislation but also paves the way for more consolidation in the sector. Although currently dominated by a handful of players headed by UPC, T-Kábel and FiberNet, it is also served by around 400 much smaller operators. The coverage rule was at one time even more stricter, limiting individual operators to serving only a sixth of the population.
