The Croatian public broadcaster HRT plans to launch two thematic channels at the beginning of next year. According to local reports, they will be known as HTV3 and HTV News and financed by both advertising and distribution fees received from cable operators. HRT previously operated a channel named HTV3 but had to relinquish its terrestrial frequencies to the national commercial station RTL Televizija. The new HTV3 will effectively replace HTV Plus, a cable and satellite-delivered service that itself replaced the original HTV3, and offer viewers a mix of sport and entertainment. HTV News will meanwhile be one of – if not the – first wholly news-based channels in the former Yugoslavia.
