A report published by Romania’s Centre for Independent Journalism (CJI) provides interesting insights into media ownership in the country. According to a local review, it is essentially concentrated in the hands five holders, controlled by Sorin Ovidiu Vantu, Dinu Patriciu, Dan Voiculescu, Adrian Sarbu and Ringier. TV stations in Sarbu’s, Voiculescu’s and Ringier’s hands, including the Pro TV and Acasa (backed by Sarbu and CME) and Antena 1 (Voiculescu), pay the least attention to political matters. Significantly, the CJI also states that the only opportunities currently available in Romanian TV for new market entrants are in digital TV. However, there is a huge lack of expertise in the sector.
