Christopher Mattheisen, the CEO of the incumbent Hungarian telco Magyar Telekom, has said that consolidation in the company is to be stepped up in order to make savings of billions of forints. Among the measures being considered – and one that will be put to shareholders at the end of this month – is the merger of its Internet division T-Online with the landline division T-Com. Mattheisen added that although the Deutsche Telekom-backed telco is still looking to make foreign acquisitions, especially in South East Europe, these are being made increasingly difficult by the higher costs involved.
