According to data published by the Portuguese regulator Anacom, there were 2.083 million broadband Internet subscribers in the country as of the end of Q1 2007. Of these, almost three-quarters (1.51 million) used fixed broadband technologies and the remainder mobile broadband. In the former category, around 63% (946,000) had access via ADSL and 37% (558,000) cable modem. Significantly, Q1 2007 was the first quarter on record in which cable Internet access (+3.7%) grew faster than ADSL (+3.7%). Grupo PT accounted for 71% of the fixed broadband market in Q1 2007, while the overall broadband penetration in the country was 20%.
