EuroNews is to join the Multiplus DTT package in Malta following an agreement signed at MIP-TV last week. The English version of the channel is to be made available to around 15,000 subscribers. Although the agreement also allows the possibility of adding the six other language versions, this seems unlikely, given the limited capacity available on terrestrial platforms.
The Malta Communications Authority issued its DTT licences in 2005, Multiplus was quick to market in July of that year, but incumbent telco Maltacom was forced to return its licence. The telco acquired Multiplus earlier this year while its licence will shortly be readvertised.
Separately, the news channel has also secured capacity on the Austrian DTT system. In an interview with Der Standard, EuroNews President Philippe Cayla said that the channel would be added to Austria’s second DTT multiplex operated by ORS.
