Portuguese public broadcaster RTP is contemplating the launch of a number of pay channels. Following the introduction of a new television law on March 30 the broadcaster will be allowed to set up new public service channels for young people and other specialist genres. However, the cash strapped RTP does not have sufficient funds available for the new ventures.
At a recent conference about public service broadcasting organised by RTP, Minister Augusto Santos Silva has warned that it will not be possible for the state to put more resources into the public TV service, resulting in the need for the channels to levy a subscription.
