Former executives of MTV and Nickelodeon are launching six ‘micro networks’ on the web. Called Next New Networks the new venture will provide streaming content on subjects such as comics, home made clothing, car culture and cartoons. Programming will consist of short videoclips varying between three and eight minutes. Video will be free and the company hopes to attract advertisers.
Among the backers are Herb Scannell (formerly of Nickelodeon), Fred Seibert (ex-MTV), Robert Pittman (MTV) and Jonathan Miller (ex AOL and MTV). Seibert is bringing two existing video websites to the fold, channelfrederator.com (animation) and vodcars.com (car culture). The plan is to extend to over a hundred channels in five years time.
