France’s principal cable operator Numericable has opted for OpenTV as its new middleware system as it prepares to rollout advanced digital TV services. The MSO is planning to introduce high definition and digital video recorders. Last week Numericable, which also has operations in Belgium and Luxembourg, announced that it was to use Nagravision as its conditional access system for the deployment.
The two contracts can be seen as an early sign of synergies between the Kudelski conditional access and the OpenTV middleware acquired by the Swiss company late last year.
Although the former UPC France network used a combination of OpenTV and Viaccess, Numericable’s digital deployments had so far used the NDS MediaHighway platform, also with the Viaccess conditional access.
Numericable will use OpenTV’s latest generation of middleware including the OpenTV HTML browser, OpenTV PVR2 and OpenTV Core2. (JC)
