Telenor Satellite Broadcasting has announced the Thor II-R satellite will be known as Thor 5. The satellite is scheduled to launch from Baikonour, Kazakhstan, in October 2007 and is expected to be in full service by the first quarter of 2008.
“The Thor name has a strong association with Telenor’s satellite fleet”, said Cato Halsaa, Managing Director of Telenor Satellite Broadcasting. The new satellite will supplement Telenor’s existing service at the one degree West slot the Norwegian company has made its own. It will enable continued coverage of the Nordic region, Europe and the Middle East. Telenor is confident that the combination of niche channels, the demand for high definition capacity and emerging markers will continue to fuel demand.
Meanwhile, Telenor is also in the process of replacing its Thor III satellite with a decision expected by the end of April 2007. (JC)
